+27 Aikona is a project grounded in the structural discipline of a haiku. Like the traditional form, which relies on a restrictive framework, each piece in this series follows a strict syllabic pattern derived from South Africa’s international calling code: an opening row of two syllables, followed by a second row of seven.
The central investigation of the work is the economic use of language. Operating within this constraint, the project explores the limits of compression, examining how to communicate as much meaning, context, and substance as possible using the fewest amount of words.
